Context

Miss Ellie is a locally produced food brand in Antigua & Barbuda, created as an authentic alternative to imported products. From the start, the brand was rooted in values of community, quality, and local pride, with an ambition to grow sustainably while remaining approachable and trustworthy.

This project began well before launch. Miss Ellie needed a brand identity that could immediately establish credibility, support early visibility, and provide a strong foundation for long‑term consistency.

The Challenge

The brand needed a brand system capable of growing with the business. As a new brand entering a competitive market, Miss Ellie needed to launch with a clear, recognizable visual identity from day one that communicated quality and professionalism balanced with warmth. We also needed to avoid reliance on constant external design support after launch, which meant the system had to be flexible enough to scale across packaging, social media, and future touchpoints. The brand also had to be intentionally designed to resonate with both Antiguans—local and abroad—and visiting audiences. There had to be a sense of broad cultural accessibility.

My Approach

Since brands must function as interconnected ecosystems, I focused on helping the team establish strong roots before even thinking about expanding reach. Design decisions then prioritized simplicity, consistency, and ease of application to ensure the brand could be maintained confidently beyond the initial rollout.

The result is a cohesive visual identity grounded in the brand’s innate warmth; packaging and visual assets that balance shelf impact with legibility; repeatable visual patterns and content formats to support consistent communication; and support for Miss Ellie’s initial social media presence during the launch phase.

“Ilya Spencer's approach was unexpectedly thorough. The entire process was well streamlined and ensured that minimal time was wasted going back and forth over the designs. Her designs for our logo and packaging exceeded our expectations and initial designs were spot on. Feedback that our product packaging doesn't look like it was locally designed and developed demonstrates the high quality of her work.”

Outcomes & Impact

The launch of Miss Ellie was successfully supported with a consistent visual identity across packaging and early digital touchpoints, with a clear brand presence that differentiated the business as a professional, locally rooted alternative. Audience feedback during the launch phase consistently highlighted the brand’s polished, trustworthy appearance, with persons often noting that it did not look like a typical small or imported brand.

Early Brand Performance & Audience Insights

Rather than chasing short-term growth, the focus was on establishing a consistent, recognizable brand presence that could support long-term trust and sustainability.

During the first months following launch, Miss Ellie’s organic social content showed strong early visibility to a local audience, followed by the diaspora. Organic content with product-focused, event-based, and testimonial content, particularly in static and carousel formats, had the strongest engagement. This simply reinforces the importance of clear visuals and grounded storytelling in early brand-building.
